Art & Design

Here at Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery Art and Design is a great part of our curriculum. Partaking in art and design gives children a more open ended and creative way of learning. It gives children opportunities to explore their love of mark making, designing and creating something to take ownership of and be proud of. Throughout art and design the cross-curricular links are endless, you will see this throughout our well planned and taught lessons.

Intent:

A great Art and Design lesson includes:

  • Ensuring all pupils produce creative, imaginative work.
  • Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas.
  • Children will become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, as well as other selected craft skills, e.g. collage, printing, weaving and patterns.
  • Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers.
  • Finally children will develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through a series of lessons offering skills progression, knowledge progression and the opportunity to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways.
  • The lessons will offer the chance for children to develop their emotional expression through art to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development.

Implementation:

The teaching and learning of Art and Design at Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursey is based on the National Curriculum and linked to topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject.

All pupils explore and use a variety of media and material through their Art and design lessons and skills are taught to build technique progressively.

While focussing on key skills such as sketching, painting, colour mixing, sculpture and collage, famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children’s learning.

The children’s learning is further enhanced with enhancing events that happen during the different terms when Art and Design is linked with other subjects to give the children opportunities for collaborative working and exploring different styles and techniques of art and design. Days such as parent events, experience days and  days spent at church enchance these skills.

Inclusion:

At Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery we ensure that our lessons are planned and assessed to provide a creative and inspirational implementation of Art and Design and to support the inclusivity of all children throughout the school. When planning Art and Design, staff ensure that activities are inclusive and accessible to all, including those with SEND, matching and challenging pupils’ abilities.

Assessment:

In EYFS, children are continuously being assessed each and everyday through conversations with staff withing the classroom. Children are assessed through pictures taken throughout the year and sent to parents through dojo. Children are also assessed through an application known as iTrack, Art and Design will fall under the umbrella of Expressive Arts and Design.

In KS1, children are assessed throughout their Art and Design lessons and other lessons that Art and Design is incorporated into. They also have Art folders that are assessed. The children are then assessed on iTrack.

All staff then analyse the date provided to ensure good future planning takes place and good progress is made throughout the year.
