In April 2013 the Government announced new funding for school PE and sport to ensure the Olympic legacy lived on. It was given from September 2013 onwards, with varying amounts given each financial year. Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6, determined using data from the January school census.
This funding should be used to improve the quality and breath of PE and sport provision. School’s are free to determine how best to use this funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means schools should use the premium to develop or add to the PE and sport activities they already offer and make improvements that will benefit pupils joining the school now and in future years.
Ofsted assesses how primary schools spend their PE and sport premium and schools must publish details of how they spend their PE and sport premium funding on their website.
