Intent
To ensure we have a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities to help build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
We aim to ensure all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives.
Implementation
Pupils will develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They will have opportunities to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
They will take part in two hour sessions of high quality planned PE a week (using AVSSP planning) on top of the 45 minutes per day active playtimes and dinner times. They will also take part in Teach Active elements to their Maths and English lessons weekly.
Through quality planning, pupils will be taught:
- to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- to participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- to perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Impact
Children’s learning in PE is assessed thoroughly at termly assessment points throughout the year. The PE leader completes data analysis after each assessment point and uses this to inform pupil progress meetings with the senior leadership team and class teachers. These are used to identify where Sports Premium money may need to be spent in future to ensure quality teaching and learning. It also may highlight any children where targeted interventions may be needed to enable them to progress further or develop a skill that they are finding particularly difficult.
We want our children to be healthy both mentally and physically. We want them to be resilient active learners who take pride in their achievements. We want our children to make progress with their physical development as they grow through our school.
How you can support your child at home
Please ensure your child is getting every chance to be active and learns the importance of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle. Please encourage them to take part in our extra curricular sporting activities.
Here are some online sites that the children enjoy taking part in at school which just gives them the opportunity for short active breaks.
