Here at Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery music is a great part of our curriculum. Partaking in music gives the children a more free and explorative way of learning. Music gives the children a variety of different opportunities to learn through the love of music. The correlation between music and other subjects such a history, geography, English, mathematics are unmissable.
Intent:
A great music lesson includes:
- at least one hour of classroom music teaching for key stages 1 to 3 (years 1 to 9)
- access to lessons across a range of instruments, and for singing
- opportunities to join your school choir or vocal group
- opportunities to join your school ensemble, band or group (such as an orchestra or rock band)
- opportunities to have your music heard – for example, in concerts, competitions or shows
- opportunities to go to live performances at least once a year
Implementation:
Charanga!
At Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery we use Charanga to support planning our music lessons. Charanga is a Multi-award-winning music teaching and learning platform that is complete with a range of curricula, teaching resources, content-building and personalisation tools and music technology that ensures that children are gaining a love for music but also reaching all the correct goals in a fun and engaging way. Charanga ensure that a child’s musical journey is about playing and creating music, not just reading about others doing it!
Music is planned and taught through Charanga by all teachers once a week.
In EYFS , Music is delivered through both taught lessons and through continuous provision. Each term music is carefully planned to ensure continuity through our topics and learning objectives. Music falls under the umbrella of Expressive Arts and Design strand of the Early Years Curriculum.
Music in KS1 build continuity of musical talent through ensuring that all other subjects include some musical element in. For example, musical songs to help with mathematics and English.
As a whole school each week the teaching staff plan and teach collective worship where the children learn an array of different songs that are related to our school values and the Christian faith. We also ensure that each term, the whole school partake in a school concert which contains topic related songs, rhymes and hymns.
Inclusion:
After a lot of research, we, at Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery decided that Charanga offered the most creative and inspirational implementation to support the inclusion of all children throughout the school. When planning Music, staff ensure that activities are inclusive and accessible to all, including those with SEND, matching and challenging pupils’ abilities.
Assessment:
In EYFS, children are continuously being assessed each and everyday through conversations with staff withing the classroom. Children are assessed through pictures taken throughout the year and sent to parents through dojo and placed up on the music walk. Children are also assessed through an application known as iTrack, music will fall under the umbrella of Expressive Arts and Design.
In KS1, children are assessed throughout their music lessons and other lessons that music is incorporated into. The children are the assessed on iTrack.
All staff then analyse the date provided to ensure good future planning takes place and good progress is made throughout the year.
Impact:
With the use of Charanga, teachers planning and teaching of the scheme, the children will develop their musical skills practically and become confident within this area of learning. It will encourage children to open up and find their love for all genres of music whilst supporting and gaining good progress within their learning across all curricula.
